08 Jun Calling all Entrepreneurs: Civic Technology Startup Weekend
Got a big idea for San Antonio?
Join us for a Civic Technology (Civic Tech) Startup Weekend June 22-24 at Geekdom to get the next big Civic Technology startup off the ground. Solve challenges in your community, make connections, and start innovating meaningful solutions to the problems that matter most to you.
CivTechSA is happy to work so closely with Techstars, an organization dedicated to accelerating innovation and startups, to put on this unique opportunity for San Antonio entrepreneurs.
What is Civic Tech?
Civic Technology focuses on enabling resident engagement or participation in government by strengthening the relationship between the people and government. Whether through making it easier to communicate with elected officials or by improving the ways the government delivers services to residents, Civic Tech aims to make innovation a keystone of democracy.
Your ideas could touch on sustainability or environmental challenges, accessibility to services, transportation, health-related challenges, food scarcity, etc.
Come to the Startup Weekend, present the challenges you want to solve, and learn how to turn them into a business.
What is Startup Weekend?
Startup Weekend is a 54 hour event that brings together San Antonio designers, developers, entrepreneurs, and experts from all domains in order to do amazing things together.
Participants have an opportunity to pitch an idea, or join the team they think they can contribute the most to. Throughout the weekend, participants have access to mentors that will help them validate their idea, develop a minimum viable product (MVP), and prepare for the final pitches on Sunday.
At the end of the weekend, participants have the opportunity to compete for prizes that will help them continue to build the top ideas. This Startup Weekend, in partnership with CivTechSA, focuses specifically on Civic Technology to help tackle some of San Antonio’s biggest challenges.
What’s it like?
You’ll pitch your own idea or listen to others, then vote on the most interesting ideas and form teams with diverse skill sets. You can come with friends, but you’ll get the full experience if you participate in separate teams. Remember, it’s all about the team.
The idea you pitch and the problem you set out to solve can span social, educational, financial, environmental, or other issues. Over the course of the weekend you’ll be challenged to create a prototype of your MVP that fits the needs of your target customer. You’ll get feedback, iterate, and likely pivot your approach entirely! Important: You cannot have worked previously on your idea.
